Each year The City, Inc. works with more than 2,700 youth and families who reside in the inner-city neighborhoods of Minneapolis. These neighborhoods are often plagued with poverty and violence. The sense of hopelessness permeates the streets and aspirations for a brighter future simply do not exist. The City, Inc. is dedicated to helping young people and their families receive the support they need so that they can begin to build a life that is filled with hope and aspirations. We give them opportunities so that they can gain the tools they need to be successful in all areas of their lives.

History

In 1967, a group of fathers and sons met with a priest at a South Minneapolis church to talk about behavior problems among the local youth. The church, Holy Rosary, had been sponsoring dances for teens through its youth club. It was decided that the youth in the community needed a place of their own to hold weekly teen dances and hang out after school. A space was rented on Lake Street and incorporated as The Psychotic City Teen Center; within two months, the name had changed to The City, Inc.  The City School was established in 1970 and social services were formally added in 1980.

In the late 1980s, The Way Opportunities Unlimited, a community-based organization in North Minneapolis founded the same year as The City, Inc., closed its doors. The City Inc. acquired The Way's building and expanded its school and other programs to the North side community.

Mission
