Arc Great Rivers and Arc Hennepin-Carver merged Jan. 1, 2006 to become Arc Greater Twin Cities. Arc Greater Twin Cities' mission is to secure for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families opportunities choose and realize their goals of where to live, learn, work, and play.
Services / Programs
Advocacy and Family Support -- direct assistance and one to one advocacy for individuals with disabilities and their families
ArcShops -- informational sessions in a workshop format addressing issues arising throughout the life span.
Community Inclusion/Multicultural outreach -- direct assistance helping people with disabilities to participate fully in community life.
GetSet! Training for Special Education Success -- parent-to-parent training on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, to help parents participate in their child's education planning and to strengthen their advocacy skills.
Sibshops/Parent Connections/Caregiver Support --services, education and support for siblings of children with disabilities. Sibshops are offered for ages 5 to 8; ages 9 to 12; and teens. Parent Connections and Caregiver Support groups help with managing the responsibilities for caring for a family member with a disability.
Public Policy Advocacy and Action Alert Network -- educate public policy makers about the unique needs and issues facing people with disabilities and training for volunteers on how to influence systems change.
Self-Advocacy Support - Arc supports People First, an international self-advocacy and self-help organization for people with disabilities. People First chapters meet in all seven metro-area counties.

History
Arc was founded in Minneapolis in 1946 when a small gathering of parents, family members, and educators met to discuss their hopes and dreams for their children with developmental disabilities. Today, Arc Greater Twin Cities is one of almost 1,000 Arc chapters nationwide, all working to improve the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
