History

IIM was founded in 1919 as a branch of the YWCA of St. Paul to meet the unmet needs of immigrant women and families.  We have occupied several locations within the city and frequently partner with agencies and programs throughout the metropolitan Twin Cities area. We began sponsoring refugees in 1975 and have provided the largest number of sponsorships of both the Hmong and Somali communities nationally. The IIM cultivates new programs and services to meet evolving contemporary needs of New Americans while keeping focus on its purpose.  Our face is known to many Minnesotans by the presentation of our annual fundraising event: The Festival of Nations.

Mission

Since its inception, the mission of the International Institute of Minnesota has remained constant. It is to:

           provide a center for information and assembly for all nationalities and races;

develop fellowship and understanding among such persons through group meetings and activities;

promote the welfare of our foreign-born population and their families; and

preserve and stimulate intercultural values.
