History

PWCC opened its doors in 1924 as a settlement house. The center was the first agency in the Twin Cities dedicated to serving African-Americans.  In its early years, the center had four main departments which were recreation, education, music and dramatics. It was a place where young people gathered for fellowship, skill development and support for their dreams. It housed numerous African American entertainers, civic leaders, educators, and students who were refused lodging elsewhere at the time due to racial discrimination.

Mission

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center provides comprehensive, quality programs in life-long learning, child development and family support for the diverse Greater Minneapolis Community.
